Competitor analysis

The “Competitor analysis” view compares your site with the domains AI engines cite on your prompts and with the competitors you declare. Its AI figures are measured on your latest observations; nothing is estimated.

What the view shows

  • A KPI strip: competitors tracked, observed AI citations, your AI share of voice and AI mentions.
  • The positioning map (bubble chart), when historical data exists for at least one competitor.
  • Share of voice in AI answers: your brand and your competitors, as a share of mentions and as a share weighted by position.
  • AI citations per competitor and, when historical data exists, shared keywords per competitor.
  • The “Top organic competitors” table, sortable, paginated and exportable to CSV.

Where the competitors come from

OriginWhat it means
Identified by the analysisAfter an analysis' AI stage, NeoRank keeps the domains cited most on your prompts over the last 90 days — AI observation citations and Google AI Overviews references — excluding your own domain and its subdomains. Ten at most.
Added by youA domain you type in “Add a competitor”. It brings no figure of its own: its AI citations are counted from the observations.
Historical dataCompetitors and figures (shared keywords, visibility, estimated traffic, authority rank) read by the market-data provider before it was retired. They are shown with their date, as history.

Adding or removing a competitor

  • Type a domain (e.g. competitor.com) in “Add a competitor”; “https://” and “www.” are stripped. Your own domain is refused.
  • Up to 100 competitors added by hand per site.
  • Adding and removing require a paid plan (see the plans) and a role that can change the site.
  • A competitor added by hand is carried, at the next analysis, into the default prompt group's list of names looked for: its mentions are then searched for in the answers.

The AI figures, and their window

Citations, mentions and shares of voice are read over the site's last 3 completed AI runs — the same window as the other AI views. The newest one's date is shown at the top of the view.

FigureReading
AI citationsThe number of observed answers with a cited URL on the competitor's domain (subdomains included). “0” means observed with no citation.
AI mentionsThe times an answer names the competitor. Only the names your prompt groups track are looked for: otherwise the cell reads “mentions not looked for”.
AI share of voiceThe share of brand and competitor mentions that goes to each. With no mention over the window, no share is computed.

If no competitor is mentioned in the answers, your share of voice can reach 100 %: the view then says it is not comparative. The detailed computation is on the AEO page.

Reading the map and the table

  • Map: horizontal axis = shared keywords (%), vertical axis = visibility, two historical values; diameter = observed AI citations. It is hidden when no competitor has both values.
  • Table: competitor, then — only if at least one competitor has a historical value — intensity and shared keywords, estimated traffic and authority score; finally AI citations and AI share of voice.
  • A column only the former provider filled is hidden when no competitor has a value for it; a short note says so, with a “Why?” link.
  • The CSV export keeps every column, empty where nothing was read.

What the view does not do

  • No new estimated traffic, ranked keywords or market authority for a competitor: these figures no longer have a measured source.
  • No monitoring of your competitors' pages, ads or links.
  • The number of competitors shown is limited: the rows with the highest historical overlap first, then alphabetically.

A method

  1. Track prompts and run observations in AI visibility.
  2. Check the list: remove the sources that are not rivals, add the ones missing.
  3. Declare your real rivals in “Add a competitor”: they are taken into the suggested group at the next analysis, or right away with “Update the suggested group” in AI prompt groups.
  4. Spot who is cited where you are not, and work on your presence in those sources (see GEO).
